Shanghai Children's Medical Center is a tertiary Grade A hospital and one of the highest level centers in the fields of pediatric congenital heart disease, blood/tumor, and developmental behavior in China. The central laboratory undertakes a large number of national level scientific research projects and clinical testing tasks, and puts forward extremely high requirements for the quality, stability, and traceability of experimental water:

1. Water quality standardization requirements: Different laboratories (molecular biology, cell culture, physical and chemical analysis) have different water quality requirements, and the original dispersed desktop computers are difficult to manage uniformly, resulting in uneven water quality and affecting the consistency of experimental results.

2. Management specialization requirements: The maintenance of dispersed desktop equipment, replacement of consumables, and archiving of records are all the responsibility of each laboratory, which is difficult to manage and poses risks of omissions and errors.

3. Cost intensive requirements: repeated investment in multiple decentralized equipment, scattered procurement of consumables, high operation and maintenance costs, and occupying a large amount of valuable laboratory table space.



Implementation Plan

  • Central preparation system: equipped with Q-Center500 central pure water system, using municipal tap water as the inlet, with a production capacity of 500 liters/hour, to prepare pure water that meets the first level water standard of GB6682-2008, and transport it to various laboratories through circulation pipelines.
  • Intelligent circulation distribution: adopting a circular circulation pipeline design, equipped with a constant pressure water supply system and UV sterilization device, ensuring that the water quality in the pipeline network is always fresh and stable, and avoiding the growth of bacteria in stagnant water sections.
  • Terminal refinement: Three Q-STER series terminal ultrapure water machines are installed in each key laboratory to further refine according to different experimental needs, producing ultrapure water with a resistivity of 18.25M Ω· cm, meeting high-end experimental requirements such as PCR, cell culture, HPLC, etc.
  • Intelligent monitoring system: equipped with an IoT remote monitoring platform, real-time monitoring of the central system and terminal operation status, water quality parameters, consumables life, supporting mobile phone alarms and data analysis.

Implementation results

  • Data quality improvement: After the system runs, the water quality of the central water supply stabilizes at a resistivity greater than 10M Ω· cm, and the terminal ultrapure water resistivity is 18.25M Ω .cm@25 ℃, microorganisms<1cfu/ml, TOC<5ppb, all water quality indicators are stable and better than the design standards. The repeatability and reliability of experimental results have been significantly improved, and the data consistency of multiple national level scientific research projects has been improved.
  • Management efficiency and cost optimization: Unified operation and maintenance: Managed by the center, each laboratory does not need to maintain equipment on its own, resulting in a 50% increase in management efficiency. Space release: 12 scattered desktop computers have been eliminated, freeing up approximately 8 square meters of laboratory countertop space and making the laboratory layout cleaner and more standardized. Cost reduction: Unified and professional predictive maintenance maximizes the utilization of consumables, reducing overall operation and maintenance costs by about 30% compared to decentralized models.
  • Business continuity is fundamentally guaranteed: the reliability and stability of the system ensure that there have been no incidents of experimental business stagnation caused by interruptions in pure water supply since its operation. The IoT monitoring platform achieves an accuracy rate of over 95% for fault warning, and all maintenance work is completed within the plan, truly achieving zero unexpected downtime.
